Used Cars Under $5,000 Recommended By Edmunds.com

Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, has launched “The Debt-Free Car Project,” which aims to assure car buyers that they can find a reliable used car for under $5,000 without the burden of monthly payments. Last month, Edmunds.com’s consumer advice editors purchased a 1996 Lexus ES300 for $3,800, and over the next year they will document the vehicle’s performance as part of the company’s long-term car test fleet.

“Not everyone has the credit or steady income to afford monthly car payments, so it’s important to show consumers that they can find a dependable used car for just a few thousand dollars up front,” says Edmunds.com Consumer Advice Editor Ronald Montoya. “We were determined not to buy a beater that would have us visiting a mechanic every month and, like any car buyer, we wanted a car that we would not be ashamed to drive.”

1996 Lexus

Edmunds.com’s consumer advice editors used online resources to find the Lexus at an independent car dealer in Pasadena, CA. The forest green ES300 had 135,000 miles on the odometer and a vehicle history report showed a clean accident record and multiple service visits to a Lexus dealer. After back-and-forth negotiations, the dealer agreed to sell the vehicle for $3,800 out the door. For the full blow-by-blow of Edmunds.com’s shopping and negotiating process for the 1996 Lexus ES300, please visit http://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/the-debt-free-car-project.html.

Edmunds.com editors will track the car’s fuel, maintenance and repair costs, as well as their anecdotal experiences while driving the car on a daily basis. They’ll drive to and from work, run errands around town and take long road trips with a goal driving it 15,000 miles in the next year. Readers can track the vehicle’s progress on Edmunds’ InsideLine.com’s award-winning Long Term Road Tests blog.

“The Debt-Free Car Project” is just the latest example of Edmunds.com practicing what it preaches. Editors will use the same strategies advocated in a piece published earlier this year that advises consumers “How to Buy and Maintain a Very Inexpensive Car” at http://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/how-to-buy-and-maintain-a-very-inexpensive-car.html.

When buying any used car in any price range, it’s always important to ask the seller all the right questions. Edmunds.com provides an outline to make sure you hit all the right points with its Used Car Worksheet at http://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/used-car-worksheet.html.

Get the best deal on a used car

NASDAQ.com has a new article out on getting the best deal on a used car, written by Jessica Anderson of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance:

Lessons from the Great Recession are still resonating with car buyers. Choose a new vehicle and depreciation slices up to 20% off the value in the first year. Choose used and someone else takes that financial hit. But all the converts to used cars have created an unintended consequence: The used-car supply is tight and prices are at all-time highs. That doesn’t mean deals aren’t out there. But to find them, you’ll have to do a little more research, look in new areas and bargain smarter for the car you want.

It may be two to three years before the supply-and prices-get back to normal levels. Tom Kontos, chief economist for Adesa, a vehicle-auction company, says new-car sales and leasing recovered in 2010, so three-year-old vehicles will start coming back into the market next year and put some downward pressure on prices.

With gas near $4 a gallon, fuel-efficient vehicles are in high demand-and their prices are high, too. But manufacturers began focusing on…

Edmunds.com on vehicle inspections

Edmunds.com, certifiable car experts, on vehicle inspections:

Inspect That Used Car Before Buying!

Where To Get a Used Car Inspected and What Is Covered

by , Senior Consumer Advice Editor, Edmunds.com

No piece of car buying advice is more often ignored than this: Inspect a used car before you buy it. Why do buyers plunk down thousands of dollars on a car with little more than an around-the-block test-drive and a glance under the hood? Three reasons deter car buyers from taking this vital step:

  • Most consumers don’t know that good used car inspections are readily available.
  • Many car buyers don’t want to pay the extra money for an inspection.
  • Some people anticipate a hassle prying the car away from a dealer or private party.

With a little planning, the inspection process can be as fast and revealing as a Hollywood exposé. If the inspection report is clean, you can buy with confidence. If it unearths a checkered past, you can back away or negotiate a lower price in line with the cost of repairs.

Neil Armstrong’s 1967 Corvette Sting Ray for sale

If you’re in the market to buy a used Corvette Sting Ray, here’s some info on one for sale on eBay.com that has some history that’s out of this world.

Neil Armstrong's 1967 Corvette Sting Ray

Astronaut Neil Armstrong once owned this Corvette Sting Ray. Now it's for sale on eBay.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong – you know, the first man to walk on the moon – was once the owner of this 1967 Corvette Sting Ray. It was given to him December 15, 1966 by Jim Rathman Chevrolet in Melbourne, Florida under a program initiated by Mr. Rathman to provide NASA astronauts with a Corvette. They would keep the Corvette for a year and then turn it in and get a new one.

This would be an interesting car to see the vehicle history report and get a pre-purchase vehicle inspection, to see what it’s true condition really is!

Accelerating demand for used cars

Are you looking to sell a used vehicle? This might be the time. Here’s a good look at the state of the used vehicle market by Cathy Bussewitz of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat in California.

When Tony Cortese decided to sell his 10-year-old Honda Civic, he posted it on Craigslist a little before midnight on a Tuesday. The very next morning, he awoke to nearly a dozen text messages and missed calls, and the phone didn’t stop ringing.

He had asked $4,000 for the two-door coupe that had about 105,000 miles on its engine. Throughout the day, Cortese fielded about 25 calls, with some frenzied buyers offering to pay hundreds of dollars more than his asking price.

Ted Williams and how to wring an extra $20 out of a used car

From Scientific American, no less: A report on how the miles on your car can affect your price. A guest blog on SA by Garth Sundem:

Ted Williams entered the final two games of the 1941 season batting .39955. If he’d sat them out, the average would’ve been rounded up to .400, making him the only MLB player in the modern era to bat the milestone. Manager Joe Cronin told Williams the decision to play and risk it or simply sit on the record was up to Williams, who famously said, “If I can’t hit .400 all the way, I don’t deserve it.” He went six for eight in the season-ending double-header and finished with a .406 batting average.

Ted Williams in 1949

“But many players make the other choice,” said Devin Pope, behavioral scientist at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, when I interviewed him for my book, Brain Trust. Though no one’s recently had the good fortune to confront the decision while camped at .400, many players have entered their last at bat with a .300 average. “More than 30 percent of those batters send in a pinch hitter,” says Pope. On the flip side of the .300 fence, Pope explains that batters at .299 never send in pinch hitters – and they never walk. For better or for worse, players who go into their final at-bat with a .299 average swing, trying to get the hit that puts them over the .300 hump.

(I know, it doesn’t sound like it’s about used vehicles, but trust me, read on by clicking the link below)

And a reminder, before you buy a used vehicle, whether it has 2,000 or 200,000 miles, be sure to get it inspected by a professional vehicle inspector. You’ll be glad you did.

KBB: Rising Used-Car Values Aid New-Vehicle Sales

April Blue Book Market Report Advises Dealers Not to Overpay on Used Fuel-Efficient Models in Months Ahead

IRVINE, Calif. — Kelley Blue Book www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new car and used car information, today reports that rising used-car values are aiding new-vehicle sales.  According to Kelley Blue Book’s Blue Book Market Report for April 2012, after a sluggish start to the year, gains in used-car values have accelerated in recent weeks.  Rising used-car values likely have played a role in supporting the increase in new-vehicle sales in recent months, especially sales of fuel-efficient vehicles.

Kelley Blue Book logo“Values at auctions across the country increased nearly 2 percent in March, primarily led by strong gains in values of fuel-efficient vehicles, which have been in high demand from rising gas prices,” said Alec Gutierrez, senior market analyst of automotive insights for Kelley Blue Book.  “Seasonal influences also played a role in the market’s strength.  March traditionally is one of the strongest months of the year for both new- and used-car sales, and this year was no exception.”

Strong sales coupled with a limited supply of used vehicles at auction only put further upward pressure on values.  Many one- and two-year-old used fuel-efficient vehicles are so expensive today that a comparable new vehicle may only be marginally more expensive.

“Consumers have more options than ever before when it comes to fuel-efficient offerings, and many of these vehicles can be leased for less than $200 per month and a small down payment,” said Gutierrez.  “Dealers must keep this in mind as they continue to pay more and more for used compacts at auction.  As values rise, dealers will find it difficult to pass along the premium paid at auction to consumers.”

Dealers should be especially wary of overpaying on used fuel-efficient vehicles in the months ahead.  With so many new and redesigned subcompact and compact offerings available today, consumers will have little reason to pay close to sticker for a one- or two-year-old used vehicle.

Used Cars that won’t break the bank

We think Jerry Edgerton at CBS MoneyWatch is pretty sharp when it comes to used cars, (For example, visit http://www.buyingausedvehicle.com/?p=652 , and http://www.buyingausedvehicle.com/?p=411) and this week, he’s got some advice for buying a used vehicle that won’t break the bank. This is especially important now with used car prices at all-time highs.

Here’s his story:

It is a tough time to buy a used car but a great time to sell one or trade it in. Values for midsize and small cars have risen $500, or 4.3 percent, since the start of the year, according to the NADA Used Car Guide.

Americans’ concern about rising gas prices, even as the economy struggles for lift, has especially boosted prices for used, high-MPG cars. But even if gas prices may be peaking, forecasters don’t see any sharp pullback in used car prices the rest of this year. That is in part because plummeting auto sales in 2009 during the depths of the recession now translates in a crimped supply of three-year-old cars…

So they’re offering a list of Jalopnik readers’ picks for best used cars priced in the $2899 range, which is the amount of the average IRS tax refund.

Here’s a link to this story – see what $3000 (give or take) will do for you!

(If I’m buying a $3000 used car, I’d make sure to get it inspected before buying it!)
